"Tarns of the Fells" follows on from the successful "Flora of the Fells" publication and festival of summer 2004.
The book "Tarns of the Fells" has been produced by a partnership of conservation trusts (the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the Freshwater Biological Association and the Friends of the Lake District ) and brings together aspects of the origin of tarns, their natural history and their roles in art, literature and history. We hope visitors and local people will find it interesting and that it will inspire folk to visit tarns and find out more about them.
This website features the programme for the Tarns of the Fells Festival - please join in the events.
The Database of Plants and Animals in Tarns is under development and is posted here to let you do two simple queries. Find out the species of plants and animals that have been recorded for any of the 400 or so tarns for which we have data or look at the distribution of named plants or animals across Cumbria . Read more about the database project by clicking on the page.
The Tarns Log Book is part of the document archive of the Freshwater Biological Association and provides a glimpse of the scientific work going on around the Lake District 50 years ago.
